LIS 644 Individual Topic

My topic for our individual project is customer relationship management (CRM) software and its application in academic libraries.

The structure of my project:

CRM Overview
  • Definition
  • Typical components
  • History of CRM
  • General uses in the business world
CRM in libraries
  • Ways CRM can be applied to academic libraries (serials, liaisons, reserves, etc)
  • Advantages: cloud platform, easy access, cost (opensource CRM=free) no central human node of information, common organizational structure, easy transfer of information
  • Disadvantages: practical considerations such as cost (commercial CRM = expensive), system maintenance, negatives of cloud computing, no one-size-fits-all CRM: each organization has to find their own best fit (not necessary with things like spreadsheets, databases, or text documents)
Extensions of CRM's usefulness (briefly): beyond operational advantages
  • Use in datamining/bibliomining
  • OLAPs

For my demonstration, I am going to show the CRM I use at work along with another opensource CRM software I've found, and I will briefly go over the pluses and minuses of using CRM in an academic library.

On Delicious, I am tagging items related to this project as ResourceReviews.
